Pool automation systems in Australia have moved from a premium option on high-end builds to a mainstream consideration on almost any new pool project. The technology has matured, the cost has come down and the practical benefit — controlling your pool from a phone rather than walking to the equipment area to adjust settings — is real and immediate.


But pool automation is not one thing. It covers a range of systems, capabilities and integration options that vary significantly in what they deliver and what they cost. Understanding how the systems work — and what each capability actually means in practice — makes the specification decision straightforward rather than confusing.


What Pool Automation Systems in Australia Actually Do

A pool automation system is a central controller that manages the electrical components of the pool and spa — the pump, the filter, the heating, the lighting, the water features, the sanitisation system and the spa jets — from a single interface rather than individual manual controls.


The interface can be a wall-mounted touchpad at the pool equipment area, a remote-control handset or, in modern systems, a smartphone app. The homeowner can see the current status of every component, adjust settings, create schedules and respond to alerts — from anywhere with an internet connection.


The pool runs to a programme rather than requiring manual intervention. The pump runs for the hours the filtration system requires. The heater turns on at a set time so the pool is at temperature when the homeowner wants to swim. The lights activate at sunset. The water features run on a schedule or at the touch of a button.


The Core Components of a Pool Automation System

The Controller

The controller is the brain of the system — the central unit that receives input from sensors and the user interface and sends instructions to each connected component. It is typically housed in the pool equipment area alongside the pump, filter and chlorinator.


Controllers vary in their processing capability, the number of components they can manage simultaneously and the sophistication of their programming options. Entry-level controllers manage the basic components — pump, lights, heating. Advanced controllers can manage every component of a complex pool and outdoor entertainment system — multiple pumps, zone lighting, water features, fire features, outdoor audio and spa controls — from a single integrated interface.


The Sensors

A pool automation system relies on sensors to monitor pool conditions and respond to changes without manual intervention.


Temperature sensors monitor pool and ambient water temperature and instruct the heating system to maintain a set temperature.


Flow sensors detect whether the pump is running and the circulation system is functioning correctly.


Chemical sensors — in more advanced systems — monitor pH, ORP (oxidation-reduction potential, a measure of sanitiser effectiveness) and salt levels, and can automatically dose chemicals or adjust the chlorinator output to maintain target water chemistry.


Rain sensors can pause irrigation systems and adjust pool cover systems in response to rain.


The Interface

Wall-mounted touchpads provide a physical control point at the pool equipment area or adjacent to the pool. They display current pool status and allow direct control of all connected components.

What a Pool Automation System Can Control

Filtration and Pump Speed

Variable speed pumps — which adjust their speed to match the required flow rate rather than running at full power continuously — are one of the most significant energy efficiency improvements available in pool technology. A variable speed pump operating at reduced speed for extended periods consumes significantly less electricity than a single-speed pump running at full power for shorter periods.


Pool automation systems manage variable speed pumps precisely — adjusting speed for filtration cycles, feature operation and heating circulation — producing the optimal balance between water turnover, energy consumption and component longevity.


Heating

The heating system — whether solar, heat pump or gas — is managed by the automation controller to maintain a target pool temperature. The homeowner sets the desired temperature. The controller monitors the actual temperature via sensors and activates the heating system as needed.


Scheduling is a key benefit here. A pool set to be at 28 degrees at 6pm every weekday will be at 28 degrees at 6pm every weekday — without any manual intervention. The heating system runs as needed during the day to reach that temperature before the nominated time.


Lighting

Pool lighting controlled through an automation system can be adjusted for intensity, colour (where colour-changing LED fixtures are installed) and scheduling. Lights can be set to activate at sunset and deactivate at a set time. Different lighting scenes — entertaining mode, ambient mode, swim mode — can be programmed and activated at the touch of a button.


Water Features and Sanitisation

Water features — pumps, blade features, deck jets, spillways — are individually controllable through the automation system. Each feature can be scheduled, activated on demand or incorporated into programmed scenes.


Sanitisation — the chlorinator output or chemical dosing system — is managed by the controller. Salt chlorinators in automated systems adjust their output based on monitored ORP levels rather than running at a fixed output setting, maintaining more consistent water chemistry with less manual adjustment.


Entry-Level vs Advanced Systems

Entry-level pool automation manages the core components — pump, heating, lighting and basic scheduling — from a smartphone app. These systems are appropriate for most standard residential pools and represent a significant improvement over fully manual control at a modest cost premium over basic equipment.

Cost: ~$1,500 to $4,000 for the controller and basic integration, on top of the component costs.


Mid-range automation adds chemical monitoring, variable speed pump integration, multiple lighting zones and water feature control. This level of automation suits pools with features — spas, water features, colour lighting — where the complexity of the system makes centralised control genuinely valuable.

Cost: ~$4,000 to $8,000 for the controller and integration.


Advanced automation covers complete integration of every component — complex lighting scenes, multiple pump zones, fire features, outdoor audio, spa controls and smart home integration. This level suits premium pools where the outdoor space is a sophisticated entertainment environment.

Cost: ~$8,000 to $20,000 or more for the controller and complete integration.


The Decision to Make Before Building

The decision to include pool automation is one that needs to be made before construction rather than after. The wiring and conduit runs for an automation system are most efficiently installed during the pool construction phase — running conduit through the concrete shell and under the paving before they are poured or laid.


Retrofitting automation to a completed pool is possible but requires significant additional work — running conduit through completed concrete or under established paving. The cost and disruption of retrofitting is substantially higher than installing the infrastructure during the original build.


If pool automation is under consideration at all, the practical answer is to install the wiring infrastructure during the build — even if the full automation system is not activated immediately. The incremental cost of running conduit and wiring during construction is modest. The cost of retrofitting it later is not.
