Pool Decking Ideas and Options for Queensland Homes

photo of decking design around a pool queensland

Pool decking ideas for Queensland homes need to account for something that pool decking in cooler climates doesn't: what the surface does in direct Queensland sun.

A material that looks exceptional in a showroom or in a photograph taken in mild morning light can become uncomfortable, dangerously hot or visually washed-out under the full force of a Queensland summer afternoon. Getting pool decking right in this climate means understanding not just how it looks — but how it behaves.

That's the filter that separates genuinely appropriate pool decking for Queensland from beautiful materials that don't quite work in practice.

Pool Decking Ideas in Queensland: What to Prioritise

Before getting to specific materials, five performance criteria apply to every pool decking choice in Queensland.

Heat retention. A material that absorbs and retains heat becomes painful to walk on barefoot through the middle of a Queensland summer day. Dark materials in direct sun can reach temperatures that cause burns. Surface temperature is as important as appearance.

Slip resistance when wet. The area immediately around a pool is always wet. Barefoot swimmers, children running, wet surfaces — the decking must maintain adequate slip resistance in these conditions. This is a safety requirement, not a preference.

UV stability. Queensland's UV index is among the highest in the world. Materials that fade, chalk or degrade under prolonged UV exposure will look significantly different within a few years of installation.

Durability in a pool chemical environment. Chlorinated water and salt water splash — and the chemicals used in pool maintenance — affect some materials over time. Materials that are resistant to this environment require less maintenance and last longer.

Visual relationship to the pool. The decking material is one of the most visible elements of the pool area — in many cases, the largest single surface in the outdoor space. Its colour, texture and material character set the tone for everything else.

Pool Decking Materials: Options for Queensland

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tile is the most popular pool decking material in Queensland — and for good reason. It performs exceptionally well across all five criteria listed above.

Modern large-format porcelain — 600 x 600mm, 600 x 1200mm or larger — produces a clean, resolved pool deck surface with no visual clutter from grout lines. It is available in finishes that replicate natural stone, timber and concrete without the maintenance requirements of those materials.

For pool decking specifically, two characteristics are non-negotiable: slip resistance rating and surface temperature. Porcelain tiles for pool areas must have an appropriate anti-slip rating for wet barefoot use. And the tile colour matters for surface temperature — pale porcelain in light tones stays significantly cooler underfoot than dark porcelain in direct sun.

Rectified porcelain — with precise, consistent dimensions — allows for minimal grout joints that make the surface cleaner and easier to maintain.

Best suited to: Contemporary and modern pool designs. Pools with a clean, geometric aesthetic where the material language is restrained and consistent.

Natural Stone — Travertine

Travertine is one of the most widely used natural stone pool decking materials in Queensland and internationally. Its warm buff and cream tones, its natural variation in texture and colour and its inherent anti-slip surface make it well-suited to pool environments.

Travertine is porous — it requires sealing for pool use and periodic resealing to maintain stain resistance. In its unfilled form, travertine has natural voids and pits in the surface that provide excellent slip resistance but collect algae and debris over time. Filled and honed travertine is cleaner to maintain but smoother underfoot.

Travertine stays relatively cool underfoot in direct sun — cooler than many manufactured materials — because of its natural porosity. This is one of its genuine advantages in Queensland's climate.

Best suited to: Resort-style, Mediterranean and naturalistic pool designs where the warm tones and natural variation of the stone complement the overall aesthetic.

Natural Stone — Limestone

Limestone is similar in character to travertine — natural, warm-toned, porous and requiring sealing. It tends to be more consistent in tone and texture than travertine, with fewer voids and a more uniform surface.

Honed limestone produces a sophisticated, understated pool deck surface that suits both contemporary and traditional design directions. Its pale tones stay cool underfoot and reflect light without being visually harsh.

Best suited to: Elegant, understated pool designs — particularly those with a strong architectural character where the stone's quiet consistency complements a considered overall palette.

Natural Stone — Bluestone

Bluestone — a dense, dark basalt — produces a dramatic pool deck surface that reads very differently to travertine or limestone. Its deep blue-grey tone creates a contemporary, architectural character. Its density means it is extremely durable.

The challenge with bluestone in Queensland's pool environment is surface temperature. Dark stone in direct sun retains heat significantly. A bluestone pool deck in full afternoon sun can be uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. Strategic shade, placement in south-facing or sheltered positions, or the selection of a lighter-toned variant of the material can manage this.

Best suited to: Contemporary architectural pools where the dark, dramatic character of the stone is a deliberate design choice and the surface temperature limitation is managed by shade or positioning.

Timber Decking — Hardwood

Timber pool decking brings warmth, texture and a material character that stone and porcelain cannot replicate. In a Queensland pool area, timber creates a visual contrast with the pool water that is distinctly appealing — the warm, organic quality of the timber against the cool geometry of the water.

For pool use in Queensland, species selection is critical. The deck must be a species rated for outdoor and wet conditions — hardwoods such as spotted gum, ironbark, merbau and similar dense native species perform well. Softwoods, untreated timbers and species without appropriate durability ratings are not appropriate.

Real hardwood decking requires regular maintenance — oiling or sealing to maintain appearance and water resistance, periodic inspection for any movement or damage. In the pool environment, where the deck is regularly wet, maintenance frequency is higher than for a standard outdoor deck.

Best suited to: Tropical, resort-style and naturalistic pool designs where the warmth and organic quality of timber complements the overall design direction.

Composite Decking

Composite decking — manufactured from a combination of timber fibre and polymer — offers the visual character of timber with significantly lower maintenance requirements. It does not require oiling, does not swell or contract significantly with moisture changes and is available in a wide range of colours and finishes.

The quality of composite decking varies significantly between products. Premium composite decking performs well in Queensland's pool environment — it is UV-stable, slip-resistant and durable. Lower-quality products can fade, chalk or deform under Queensland's UV and heat.

Surface temperature is a consideration for composite decking in Queensland — darker composite products in direct sun can become quite hot underfoot. Lighter colours manage this better.

Best suited to: Designs where the timber aesthetic is desired without the maintenance commitment of real hardwood. Rental properties and homeowners who want low-maintenance performance.

Concrete — Honed or Exposed Aggregate

Concrete pool decking — either honed and sealed or with an exposed aggregate finish — is a durable, cost-effective option that produces a clean, resolved surface.

Honed concrete with a sealer produces a smooth, uniform surface that suits contemporary design directions. The colour can be controlled through oxide additives. The surface is continuous — no joints or grout lines — which produces a calm, unified appearance.

Exposed aggregate concrete — where the surface is finished to reveal the aggregate beneath — provides a naturally textured, slip-resistant surface with good anti-slip performance. The aggregate colour and size can be specified to suit the overall design palette.

Concrete requires control joints — planned breaks in the surface that manage the inevitable movement of the material — which are visible in the finished surface. Good detail design minimises their visual impact.

Best suited to: Contemporary and minimalist pool designs where a unified, low-visual-clutter surface is the design intent.

Average Pool Decking Costs in Queensland?

The costs of decking at the time of this post (2026/2027) depending on the materials, they can range from $200 - $1000 per sq metre. Not only is there materials to think about, there are the cost to install the deck and this can vary in costs based on the material used.

This table is a guide and if you would like some price points around materials including installation. We encourage you to do the research yourself as this is just purely estimates based on average pricing to assist you when reviewing your overall project costs for your backyard.
