Rooftop pool design in Australia occupies a specific category in residential pool building — complex, technically demanding, expensive and capable of producing pool outcomes that no ground-level pool can match. A pool positioned at height, with a view across a Queensland coastline, hinterland or cityscape, offers something genuinely different to a pool at ground level.
It also involves engineering, structural, waterproofing and approval requirements that are substantially more involved than a standard in-ground pool. Understanding what rooftop pool design actually requires — honestly, not aspirationally — is the essential first step before the design process begins.
What Is a Rooftop Pool Design?
A rooftop pool in the residential context is a pool positioned on an elevated structure — the roof of a building, the top level of a multi-level home, an elevated deck or platform — rather than in-ground at garden level.
The term covers several different configurations in the Australian residential market:
A pool on a flat roof. A pool positioned directly on the structural roof of a single or multi-level home. The pool is a waterproof structure sitting on top of the building, requiring the building structure to carry the pool's weight.
A pool on an elevated slab or deck. A pool on a dedicated elevated concrete slab or structural deck — not on the building's main roof, but on a purpose-built raised structure adjacent to or connecting to the home at an upper level.
A cantilevered or edge pool. A pool that extends beyond the building's footprint — cantilevered over the landscape below — creating the appearance of water floating in space. This is the most visually dramatic rooftop pool configuration and the most structurally complex.
Each configuration has different structural, waterproofing and engineering requirements. What applies to one does not necessarily apply to another.
The Engineering Requirements
The structural engineering requirements for a rooftop pool are the most significant differentiator from a standard in-ground pool — and the requirement that most immediately affects cost.
Water is heavy. A pool that is 6 metres long, 3 metres wide and 1.5 metres deep contains approximately 27,000 litres of water. At 1 kilogram per litre, that is 27 tonnes of water — before accounting for the weight of the pool shell itself, the coping, the surrounding paving and any structural surround.
The structure beneath the pool must carry this load safely. For a purpose-designed rooftop structure, the structural engineer designs the slab, the beams and the supporting columns to carry the pool load from the beginning. For an existing building where a rooftop pool is being added, the existing structure must be assessed to determine whether it can carry the additional load — and in most cases, it will require reinforcement.
A licensed structural engineer must be engaged at the earliest design stage of any rooftop pool project. The engineer's assessment of the structural requirements — and the cost of those requirements — is the foundational piece of information from which all other decisions flow.
Waterproofing
The waterproofing of a rooftop pool is more critical and more complex than for an in-ground pool. An in-ground pool with a waterproofing failure leaks water into the surrounding soil — a problem, but a contained one. A rooftop pool with a waterproofing failure leaks water into the building structure beneath — potentially catastrophic.
A rooftop pool requires a multi-layer waterproofing system — typically a combination of structural waterproofing integral to the pool shell, a secondary waterproof membrane beneath the pool and a waterproofed drain system that manages water away from the building structure in the event of any primary system failure.
The waterproofing specification for a rooftop pool is not a place for economy. The cost of a waterproofing failure — repair of the pool, repair of the building structure, remediation of any water damage to the building interior — is vastly higher than the cost of the most comprehensive waterproofing system available. The waterproofing must be designed by an engineer and installed by a specialist applicator, with inspection and certification at each stage.
Drainage and Water Management
The drainage of a rooftop pool — overflow, splash water, backwash — needs to be managed back to the building's drainage system without creating water loading on the roof structure or water ingress into the building.
Overflow gutters, drainage channels and sumps around the pool must be sized to manage the maximum likely water volume — including heavy rain combined with pool overflow — without surcharging. The drainage must connect to an appropriate discharge point.
Pool equipment — pump, filter, chlorinator, heater — must be located somewhere accessible for maintenance. On a rooftop pool, this is typically in a dedicated equipment room within the building at or below pool level, with pipework running between the pool and the equipment room. The equipment room must be ventilated, accessible and waterproofed.
Structural Approval
A rooftop pool in Queensland requires building approval — and the approval process is more involved than for a standard in-ground pool.
The structural engineering drawings, the waterproofing specification, the drainage design and the pool safety barrier design must all be submitted as part of the approval application. The certifier or council must be satisfied that the structure is safe, that the waterproofing is appropriate and that the pool meets all pool safety barrier requirements.
Pool safety barrier requirements apply to rooftop pools in the same way they apply to ground-level pools.
The height of the pool above ground level does not exempt it from compliance. A compliant pool safety barrier — at the correct height, with compliant gates and a non-climbable zone — must be incorporated into the design.
For a rooftop pool that is at a height where the perimeter of the roof structure itself provides a fall protection barrier, the relationship between the pool safety barrier requirements and the building's edge protection requirements needs careful co-ordination in the design.
What Makes a Rooftop Pool Worth the Complexity
The engineering and cost complexity of a rooftop pool is significant. The question is what it delivers in return.
The view. The primary reason for a rooftop pool is almost always the view. A pool at height — looking across a Queensland beach, harbour, hinterland or cityscape — offers an experience that a ground-level pool categorically cannot. The combination of water, elevation and a view worth having is genuinely extraordinary.
The privacy. A pool at rooftop level is private by definition. Overlooking from neighbouring properties is a common concern in ground-level pool design — particularly on small suburban blocks. A rooftop pool is above the sightlines of almost everything around it.
The architectural statement. A rooftop pool is a bold architectural feature. In a prestige residential context — a custom-designed multi-level home in a premium Queensland coastal or urban location — a rooftop pool is a defining element of the building's architectural identity.
What Does a Rooftop Pool Cost in Australia?
Rooftop pool costs in Australia start significantly above ground-level pool costs — reflecting the structural, waterproofing and engineering requirements.
For a residential rooftop pool on a purpose-designed structure, total project costs — including structural engineering, the pool shell, waterproofing, drainage, equipment room, pool safety barrier, coping and surrounding deck — typically start from $250,000 to $400,000 for a modest pool on a well-considered structure.
Complex configurations — cantilevered pools, pools on existing buildings requiring structural reinforcement, large pools at significant height — can reach $500,000 to $1,000,000 or beyond.
These are not pools for homeowners testing the budget ceiling of their project. They are pools for homeowners for whom the view, the architectural statement and the residential experience the pool delivers are genuinely central to the building project they are undertaking.
